Having witnessed 11-1/2 innings of baseball at a sun drenched Busch Stadium in just about 4 hours on Thursday, I decided to head for the train to meet my wife (who was already waiting for half an hour at the train station to pick my sorry ass up) for dinner.
Of course as i left I mentioned to my pals at the ballpark that I was certain the Redbirds would find a way to win this one in the bottom of the 12th as I was on the train.
Sure enough Matt Holliday was able to drive in Matt Carpenter( who by the way turned in a 4 hit day) with the clinching run as my train was arriving at the third stop of my 13 stop trek.
Having missed a another extra innings Cards win ( I had to leave to catch my bus in the 8th inning of Tuesday's 14 inning affair) I was just happy that my wife wasn't too mad at me as I have another busy week coming up with games (vs. Atlanta) next Thursday & Friday plus the following week's 3 game set with the Reds that I need to pick me up from.
So St. Louis sits 2 games behind the Pirates in the NL Central heading in to this weekend's series in the Windy City with rookie newcomer Kolten Wong set to take some playing time from slumping (deeply) David Freese.
As I've written before I still think the Cards needed to trade Freese while he had some value because right now he's in a 10 game funk that has seen him have 7 hits in 41 ABs with NO HRs and just 2 RBI.
But back to Thursday night.
I was able to watch much of the Mets win in San Diego without having to stay up until 2 AM as I had on Wednesday night following their 12 inning loss to the Dodgers.
The "Waiting for Buck's Baby" Mets got a HR from the expectant catcher on Thursday that pushed the club to a 4-1 lead in the 9th and eventual win following an impressive 12 strike out, no decision outing from Zach Wheeler against the Padres.
So that was 2 Winners Thursday............
As For Friday
