3 Stars..Redbirds' Coffin Nailed?

From Friday's WIN in Washington , DC, Here Are:

While the Mets won their 7th in 10 games against the Nationals on the strength of 3 homers and a solid outing from RA Dickey, the Cards dropped back to 8-1/2 games out in the NL Central (falling to the Reds here in St. Louis while the Brewers rallied to top Houston) thanks to a Chris Carpenter 2nd inning "Pelfplosion" following a questionable decision by usually brilliant catcher Yadier Molina.

With no one out after Yonder Alonso had doubled leading off the Reds' 2nd inning, Drew Stubbs attempted to sacrifice the runner to third and in doing so bunted the ball in front of the plate where Molina pounced on it and attempted to nail Alonso at third by throwing to 3rd baseman David Freese who was backpedaling after charging the bunt. The catcher hesitantly tossed the ball toward Freese who had no chance to make a play on Alonso. Luckily the ball ricocheted off a few players and Alonso was unable to score. He was able to waltz home on next batter, Juan Francisco's double which scored two runs. Carpenter's stomping around the mound and general loss of focus following the Molina "miscue" led to the Reds plating a total of 5 runs in the inning.

St. Louis did battle back to tie the game in the 5th and again in the 6th following a Todd Frazier pinch hit homer off the Cards "Ace" but eventually a Francisco 3 run homer off Kyle McClellan in the ninth put the final nail in last night's coffin and most likely the Redbirds chances at the postseason in 2011.
