Phils & ESPN Put Nail in Coffin ** KRod..He Gone

The Sunday night series finale atCiti Field against the dreaded Phillies began in what could be described as less than desirable conditions that only contributed to the Mets demise as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the Phils which combined with the Braves win Sunday afternoon, dropped the New Yorkers 10 game behind Atlanta in the NL East. Mike Pelfrey's first pitch of the game was delivered in a steady rain due to the fact that this was a MLB money making ESPN Sunday Night nationally broadcast game with no backup game scheduled. Pelfrey pitched well enough, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits in his 7 innings of work on a night when the Mets offense proved anemically inept once again. On this night in the rain, Mets batters were able to make incredibly average to below average, middle of the road righty Kyle Kendrick look like Bob Gibson as they could muster only 1 run on 6 hits with the lone run coming on a Jose Reyes HR (his 8th) in the 3rd inning(Although Jeff Francoeur, appearing as a pinch hitter in the 7th hit what would've been a game tying HR in almost any other MLB park, only to see it die in the depths of Citi's left center field and caught by Shane Victorino). Brad Lidge combined with Chad Durbin and Ryan Madsen allowing only a walk over the final 2-2/3, to close out the game with his 16th save, continuing his Mets mastery in August with his 3rd save this month.

As if the Mets needed another nail in the coffin that is 2010, the club announced Monday afternoon that closer Francisco Rodriguez would need season ending surgery to repair a damaged ligament in the thumb of his pitching hand. The high priced, underachieving righty apparently injured the hand in his much publicized attack upon his girlfriend's father Wednesday night at Citi Field.

Jon Niese (7-5, 3.50)will try to continue the 3rd place Mets' (58-59) staff's string of quality starts tonight at Minute Maid Park in Houston facing the NL Centrals 4th place Astros (51-65) who'll counter with always tough Wandy Rodriguez (9-11, 4.18).

The Wilpons MUST:

Although nails are rapidly being driven into the coffin of the 2010 Mets..
