Mets - Thank Giants <> Cards Keep pace Again

On a night when jon Niese produced yet another performance worthy of a victory over the hated Phillies, the Mets handed protection of a 2-1 lead to the bullpen in the 8th inning only to see the duo of Bobby Parnell and Pedro Feliciano fork over 4 hits and 4 runs and 2 hits and 2 runs respectively to give Philadelphia a 6 run inning en route to a 7-5 loss at Citizens Bank Park. Niese's wasted effort along with a Mets 3 run 9th inning comeback was yet another depiction of the microcosm of the 2010 Mets season. The Mets figured out how to waste solid starting pitching and made yet another futile late comeback, but couldn't come all the way back. With a season record of 54-55 the Mets were fortunate that old friend Billy Wagner watched as Larry Jones let a double off of Panda Sandoval's bat get under his glove in the 9th, allowing the Giants to tie the game. The Giants would go on to win in the 11th keeping the Mets 8 games back of division leading Atlanta in the NL East.

Johan Santana faces Cole Hamels in tonight's 2nd game after the Mets earlier today, cut their losses, salary and the vesting option possibility of Alex Cora by giving him his outright release and sending Jesus Feliciano back to Buffalo while promoting Fernando Martinez and Ruben Tejada. RA Dickey will face Roy Halladay in Sundays finale.

While the Mets got some outside help in keeping pace in the division the St. Louis Cardinals did it the old fashioned way, maintaining their spot 1/2 game behind Central leader Cincinnati, "earning" a solid win by getting an outstanding 2 hit complete game shutout from Adam Wainwright (16-6) and a 3 hit, 1 HR, 4 RBI night from Albert Pujols fueling a 7-0 win over the Marlins in Miami.

The Redbirds continue the series in Florida sending newcomer Jake Westbrook against NL All Star Josh Johnson tonight and following Sunday's finale head to Cincinnati for a big 3 game set between the 2 NL Central contenders starting Monday night.

The Mets while making a small internal roster move must still:

As Always....
