Odds on World Cup favorite Brazil entered this morning's quarterfinal match attired in their unaccustomed blue strip facing the orange clad squad from the Netherlands. Only 8 minutes into the fray Robinho put the South Americans ahead 1-0, with an assist from Felipe Melo. The well documented control game of the talented Brazilians dominated the rest of the half but could add no more to the ledger. 17 minutes into the 2nd half, Melo figured into the scoring again, this time allowing an "Own Goal" to glance off his head past his GK Cesar to level the match at 1. The shocked 5 time Cup champions played timidly until 23 minutes remained when Wesley Sneijder headed home a feed from Dirk Kuyt. Brazil attempted to up the tempo but were doomed after Melo was sent off in the 72nd minute. Brazil had held a remarkable 53-2-4 record when scoring first and a 35-0-2 record when leading at halftime in World Cup play. Holland will next face the winner of upstart Ghana vs. Uruguay in a Tuesday semi-final.
After the final whistle of the Dutch upset of Brazil the Twitter World was set on its collective behind..it's status having gone Over Capacity for over an hour..Some really pissed off Brazilians I suppose.. or Tweet Happy Dutchmen..
The Mets headed to our nations capital to face the Nationals in the start of a 4 game Independence weekend series on Thursday.
Johan Santana took to the hill facing Livan Hernandez and gave the Mets one of his better 2010 performances. Given a whopping 1 run of support over his 7 innings. Santana's line of 1 run, 6 hit, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts should have been enough on this night but the Mets case of selective anemia when he pitches continued as the Nationals pulled off another Willie Harris walk off as the Mets' nemesis worked a 1 out walk off Pedro Feliciano who then was touched for a Nyger Morgan perfectly placed bunt single and a hard hit Christian Guzman single to left with Jesus Feliciano getting to the ball quickly to hold Harris at 3rd. Manuel then replaced Pedro Feliciano with Ryota Igarashi who served up a 2-0 fastball that Ryan Zimmerman lifted to RF for a game losing Sac Fly where Jeff Francoeur had no chance to throw out Harris at home. Matt Capps(1-3) notched the win with a scoreless 9th while Feliciano took his 4th loss to go with his 2 wins.
Hopefully the Mets(44-35) will get the bats going tonight against Nats (35-45) starter Luis Atilano (6-4, 4.33). Jon Niese ( 5-2, 3.84) will toe the rubber for Jerry Manuel's club tonight before the circus that is Steven Strasburg takes center stage tomorrow as the "StraMess" faces RA Dickey in a Independence Eve day tilt.
Angel Pagan returned as a pinch runner in the 6th and remained playing CF replacing Chris Carter in the line-up moving Jesus Feliciano to LF. He anticipate being in the line-up Friday, celebrating his 29th Birthday.
Happy Birthday Heavenly Satan..& Lets Go Mets !!!!!!!
