Coach Bob Bradley's US World Cup squad faced a "fit to be tied" challenge at the hands of a physical Algerian eleven and has emerged bloodied (see Clint Dempsey) but victorious 1-0, thanks to an "extra time" goal from 126 cap veteran, Landon Donovan (his record 44th US Int'l goal). The Americans thus win Group C for their first top of the group finish since the inaugural 1930 World Cup.
The US will now face the 2nd place finisher(Germany, Ghana or Serbia) from Group D in the Knockout Round of 16 on Saturday at 2:30 PM EDT.
This fairytale/historic run by the Yanks Marches On..!
After a blowout 14-6 win over the Tigers on Tuesday in a rain delayed 4 hour 16 minute interleague match up at Cit Field the Mets (40-30) host "Mets Fans Go GaGa for Wright" night on Wednesday.
The GaGa nonsense continues. Enough Already..
On Tuesday the Mets opened up a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd versus Justin Verlander and the Tigers before the skies opened up forcing a 58 minute rain delay. Resumption of play saw Verlander replaced by 7 year minor league rookie Jay Sborz who proceeded to hit the first 2 hitters he faced(Rod Barajas and Jeff Francoeur) opening the floodgates to what would become a 15 batter 8 run inning for the Mets.
Mets starter Jon Niese worked through the first 3 innings allowing no Tiger hits fueling Mets' fans hopes for the first no hitter in club history. Niese unlike Verlander, returned after the stoppage struggling to retire only 5 batters, replaced by Fernanado Nieve in the 5th one out shy of qualifying for his 5th victory. Nieve "earned" his 2nd win of the year against 3 losses, pitching through the 7th.
The Tigers scored 4 in that 5th frame to make a game of it but the Mets continued their offensive barrage in the 7th adding 3 runs to make the final 14-6.
Seven Mets hitters delivered RBI in the game led by Angel Pagan who went 4-6 with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored. Ike Davis chipped in with 3 RBI and a 3 hit night. Jose Reyes and David "Ducky" Wright also added 3 hits apiece to the Mets 16 hit attack.
RA Dickey(5-0, 2.82) brings his dipsy doodle knuckler to the Citi mound tonight against the Tigers (38-31) who will counter with Jeremy Bonderman (3-4, 4.06)
The Vote for David "Ducky" Wright and Write in Angel Pagan "Send An Angel to Anaheim" campaigns continue. Vote often !!
Lets Go Mets !!!
